We had the absolute joy of photographing this stunning fall wedding at Heritage Oaks Wedding Barn and Event Venue  in Coral, Michigan. The day was filled with warm autumn tones, laughter, and lovely family and friends. 

The bride’s gown was a timeless choice from Spring Lake Bridal and Tuxedo , and it perfectly captured the rustic elegance of the venue. Every detail of this wedding fit the season—from the cozy barn setting to the crisp fall air outside.

The reception was full of energy thanks to Jellie Fish Productions. Their DJ brought true artistry to the night, spinning vinyl on a real turntable and keeping the dance floor packed until the very end.

One of our favorite details? The couple’s apple slice dessert bar! Guests could top their apple slices with caramel, nuts, and other fall-inspired toppings. A creative and delicious idea for anyone planning a cozy autumn celebration.

A small tip for brides: if you’re wearing layered necklaces, a dab of nail glue on the clasp can help keep them in place all day long!

I decided to go check out Cinderella’s Closet new space today and it is awesome!!!  The old Victoria Secret is now transformed into Cinderella’s Closet. I am pleased to say there is a lot more wedding dresses and a whole space dedicated to it. From the window displays to the shoe racks to the black marble floors that make the dresses glitter, I am in love.  Go check out this store and the wonderful ladies that work there.

Lessons from Both Sides of the Wedding Business: A Photographer’s Perspective

As a wedding photographer, I’ve spent years capturing special moments for couples on their big day. When my own daughter got married, I experienced the other side of the wedding industry—planning, decision-making, and selecting the best vendors. Through this process, I gained valuable insight, not just as a photographer but as a mother of the bride.

One of the most meaningful parts of the experience was working with vendors I already knew. Many of them, including the DJ, videographer, bartenders, venue owners, florist, and bakery, were professionals I had built relationships with through the wedding business. It was comforting to have a team of people who genuinely cared about us and wanted to make the day special.

The Bakery: Sweet Choices for Your Big Day

Choosing the right bakery can be overwhelming with so many options. Two of my favorites along the lakeshore are Rykes and Grand Finale. Both offer sample boxes, which can help before making a decision.
•    Grand Finale makes my favorite cupcakes, but the sample box didn’t do them justice. Unfortunately, this swayed my kids away from choosing them.
•    Rykes won them over with sugar cookies, cupcakes, and a small cutting cake. Their cake is consistently delicious, and I say this as someone who has tasted countless wedding cakes over the years.

Tips for Choosing a Bakery:
•    Always sample multiple options before deciding.
•    Consider a dessert table with cupcakes, cookies, or other sweets instead of a large cake.
•    A small cutting cake provides the traditional moment without the need for a full-tiered cake.

The DJ: Setting the Mood for the Night

Music plays a huge role in a wedding’s atmosphere. We hired Movin’ Music, a DJ I’ve worked with many times and trust completely. He provided a form for song selection and was open to requests, which made planning easy.

For dinner music, I didn’t want generic background tunes. Instead, we created a custom playlist featuring Frank Sinatra and similar artists, which set a warm and elegant tone. Having a DJ who knew us personally made the experience even more special.

Tips for Choosing a DJ:
•    Ask how interactive they are. Some stay in the background, while others engage the crowd with dance lessons or props.
•    Request a customized playlist if you have a specific vibe in mind.
•    Choose someone who understands your style and energy level for the night.

The Videographer: Capturing the Day in Motion

Photos freeze moments in time, but video allows you to relive them. We worked with John Garner from Move Media Productions, a videographer I’ve collaborated with many times. He is professional, easy to work with, and truly cares about capturing the emotions of the day.

Knowing John personally made all the difference. He wasn’t just documenting the wedding—he was invested in making it special.

Tips for Choosing a Videographer:
•    Watch previous work to ensure you like their style.
•    What is their editing process—some create highlight reels, while others provide full-length videos.
•    Make sure they work well with photographers for a smooth experience.

The Caterer: A Hidden Gem with Incredible Food

Good food can make or break a wedding reception. We chose Beechwood Grill after experiencing their catering at an outdoor backyard wedding. Their chicken was so tender it could be cut with a plastic fork. That moment convinced me they were the right choice.

They are reasonably priced, reliable, and easy to work with. Before booking, we sampled food from several caterers, which I highly recommend.

Tips for Choosing a Caterer:
•    Attend tastings to compare quality and portion sizes.
•    Consider how well they handle different venues, especially outdoor settings.
•    Do they offer setup and cleanup services beyond just serving food.

The Bartenders: Going Above and Beyond

Our bartenders came highly recommended by the venue, and they exceeded expectations. They didn’t just serve drinks—they went above and beyond, even helping clean up our DIY charcuterie board. I am especially grateful for Kelly VanderHoek and Angie Linderman who were both professional and incredibly helpful.

Having bartenders we trusted made all the difference. They weren’t just doing a job; they genuinely cared about making our night run smoothly.

Tips for Choosing Bartenders:
•    Your venue may have recommendations—they often know the best in the area.
•    Look for bartenders who do more than just serve drinks—some offer specialty cocktails or extra services.
•    Confirm if they provide glassware, mixers, and garnishes, or if those need to be supplied separately.

Final Thoughts

Experiencing a wedding from both sides—as a photographer and as the mother of the bride—gave me a new appreciation for the planning process. The decisions can feel overwhelming, but choosing trusted vendors makes all the difference.

For us, having professionals we knew and loved made the day even more special. They weren’t just vendors; they were a team of people who cared about us and wanted to make the day perfect.

The Process of Planning a Michigan Wedding

The Dress

One of the best parts of the planning process was the bride’s dress.

The next step we decided to take in the wedding process was finding a bridal dress.  We took the recommendations from past brides through some of my previous blog posts,  such as  Wedding Advice and Tips, and tried Becker’s Bridal Outlet.

We loaded the van with friends and family and headed to Lansing. Periodically, Becker’s Bridal runs Black Friday and one-day sales. I recommend following their Facebook page to see these deals.

Shelby tried on so many dresses.  Becker’s Bridal Outlet did not lack choices.  There was a dress for all shapes and sizes and a lot of variety. Shelby found a couple of interests, but overall the dress styles were itchy, heavy, lacy, or busty.

As we looked around the bridal store, the 2022 dress styles were not appealing to us.  During the visit, Shelby kept expressing that she wanted a princess dress and their selection did not fit the bill.

There were a few that she tried on a Becker’s bridal:

That night we came home and I had Shelby try on my dress that had been boxed since 1999.  Of course, the style was not satisfactory, but it was fun to see her try it on.

The next day I was at a friend’s puzzling and we talked about our bridal dresses that were saved in a box.  My friend’s mom had her dress from 2000 professionally boxed, and she had three boys and it was time for the dress to go. I said I think Shelby should try it on for fun!   So we called Shelby and she agreed to come over and humor us and try on the dress.

THE DRESS REVEAL

When we opened the box, it was two pieces. I have never seen a two-piece dress since I have photographed weddings, and I have photographed probably well over 400 dresses. I thought to myself,  this is the odd dress and likely a long shot, as it lay in the box!

Shelby tried on the dress and to her surprise said to us,  “I think this is the dress; I love it!”  My friend and I could not contain our smiles. Shelby was beaming and it was a true princess dress with a corset back and a big full skirt. She looked like a princess.

The two-piece dress offers comfort that the other dresses do not.  Shelby is a creature of comfort.  It was light, soft, and not pulling on her shoulders.  The corset was silky, and allowed for a maximum hold, forming her figure perfectly.  Shelby did not think a strapless dress was an option, but the corset’s stronghold could withstand movement and did not need to be pulled up.

As we were all beaming,  my friend said, “It is yours, Shelby.  You can take it and if you find something else, no worries. Hold on to it until you find something else.”  As the day and night went on, Shelby said, “Mom, that is the dress. Just thinking of it makes me teary.  It is perfect.”  Just in case, we decided to continue to look at more dresses to make sure it was the right dress.

A USED DRESS

The dress had been stored for 25 years was purchased in Chicago and was made by designer Maggie Sottero. Two-piece dresses were popular in the 1990s and this particular dress had beautiful Swarovski crystals hand sewn on the top.  You would also see bridesmaids’ dresses in two pieces at this time.  Of course, a used dress brought some challenges.

Even though the dress was preserved and stored in a sealed wedding box, there had been some yellowing around the armpits, a few rust spots in the front, a hole, and discoloration from spills on the train. The dress was not as bright of a white color as when it was new.

THE SEARCH CONTINUES

We were on a hunt for another two-piece dress. We visited David’s Bridal and Spring Lake Bridal which had some nice options but did not compare to our friend’s dress.

RESTORING THE DRESS

The next step was to find a place that could restore the dress.  I made several calls and found one along the lakeshore. They did a great job restoring the dress.  The dress was brightened and looked like new. All stains were removed.  Restoring the dress was approximately $500 and included the cost of restoring, hemming/fixing, and pressing.

LESSONS LEARNED

This woman has an incredible talent for restoring dresses. However,  I would now recommend getting it hemmed or repaired elsewhere.  We had a horrible time with her seamstress, she was rude and snippy.  No directions were communicated about a second fitting after the first hem and repair. The next step transmitted to us was to press one week before the wedding.

Keep in mind, I have not had to have a fitting of any sort in 25 years.

Tip #1. Be sure to go back for a second fitting.

Tip#2. Make sure to try the dress on after it is pressed. This would apply to new or used dresses alike.

I was not aware of a second fitting. Call it stupid, but I had no idea.   We did try the dress on at home after the repairs and it was fine.

However, we did not try the dress on again after the press.  Pressing made the dress considerably longer and on the day of the wedding found it to be too long for Shelby.   She was tripping over it.  We pinned it as best as we could, and we helped hold the dress as we walked her down the aisle. During dancing the dress was often stepped on.

Wedding days have a lot of moving parts, things happen.

BOXING YOUR DRESS

I am not sure I would recommend boxing your dress if there are no major stains like spills from wine or large amounts of discoloration at the bottom from a dirty floor. It takes up a lot of room, and in this case, there was still yellowing. If there are dry cleaning companies that can restore the dress 25 years later, I don’t think you need to pay the money to have the dress boxed. Some other ideas could be storing in a cedar chest or box it yourself. Avoid storing the dress on a hanger. A hanger can stretch out the fabric on the dress over time.

THE BOYS

Let’s not forget about the boys…

We were trying to find deals, and with the difference in physical sizes of the boys, in addition to some of them living in different locations, it was not ideal to shop at Macy’s or JcPenney.

We had a recommendation to try Woodland Tailoring, they were great.

THE GIRLS

All the above locations listed, have bridesmaids dresses as well. We ended up ordering fabric from Azazie.

Shelby chose Amethyst for her color. The girls could order from their location to be delivered to their home. Shelby chose a color and fabric and the girls could pick out the style of dress.

We also checked out: Birdy Grey

At both companies you only get to pick three fabrics per household for free, but we would use family and neighbors to get a few more color samples.

Wedding Planning

I have helped people coordinate the day of their wedding for about 15 years now.  When my daughter proposed to get married, I thought it would be very interesting to see what my customers have to accomplish from start to finish.   Word of mouth and advice was a great way to start. I started by reading some of my other blog posts that brides so willingly helped share some of their advice from their planning. You can find a few of the blog posts here: 2023 or  2022

I knew the venue was usually the hardest place to book as they filled up fast.  Luckily, we had plenty of time to plan this wedding with a two-year engagement!   Shelby and Jameson began to tour local venues such as The Trillium, Post Family Farm, Windmill Island, The Little Red Barn of Nunica

THE VENUE

They were interested in staying local to where we live so we didn’t check out any Grand Rapids venues and toured the lakeshore.   After touring several spots they chose The Little Red Barn of Nunica.

THE LITTLE RED BARN OF NUNICA

They chose this spot because the owners seemed to care about them and their wedding.  We felt welcomed and important.   They also allow you to be on the property for the weekend.   This is extremely helpful because it takes away the need to have a wedding planner/coordinator.  We could set up on Friday and clean up on Sunday.   There are many reasons to hire a planner, but with the knowledge I have from attending so many weddings,  the coordinating of set up and clean up were my main concerns. Those concerns were eliminated by the ability to have the weekend.

Benefits to The Little Red Barn

Some other benefits to the TLRB are they do provide you with a selection of decorations, if interested.  We used some of them: such as wood logs centerpieces, little stringed lights, signs, she has much, much more.

I am thankful the barn had tables and chairs, but you do need your own linens.  We bought them on Amazon and borrowed them. The owners provide you with all the sizes needed.  I was able to resell the ones that I bought for a little bit less than I bought.  It was cheaper than renting them. Linens can be a handful.  I also recommend having a big steam iron. We just borrowed one, but I provided an example.   One of the bridesmaids steamed Friday while we laid them out and decorated them.  It was a good process.

They have rooms for the bride and groom to get ready in the morning with plenty of space and outlets.  The boys have yard games to play and video games in the room.

Provided at the barn are a freezer and a refrigerator.   The freezer can hold 8-10 bags of ice or so.  Another thing to keep in mind when you have a barn wedding is you have to bring in your owndrinking water.  The bartenders can do this as well, but it is cheaper to bring it yourself. We bought big jugs like this BPA plastic jug. 

You can bring your own drinks into the barn. This also is a big money saver.  We shopped at Sam’s Club, Walmart, and Aldi.  The bartender you hire will help you with this as you decide on a menu.

With outdoor weddings in Michigan, you always have to worry about the weather. This was not my favorite part.  The weather was windy that day, but we were really fortunate, with no rain and overall a comfortable temperature.   She does have a large tent for the deck, and the sides can go up for weather conditions.   In over 400 weddings I have photographed,  the weather never stopped the event from happening. It always works out.

If you choose The Little Red Barn for your wedding, I learned a little tip from being there a few times. Rooms are divided. Some of the people in the tent cannot see the speeches. To solve this, we asked the videographer to run a 100ft HDMI cord to a TV in the tent. We were able to stream the speeches live on the screen so the people in the tent could see as well.

The outdoor ceremony needs an efficient sound system as well. You want to be sure that the mics can hear the bride and groom speak.  It is also beneficial for the officiant to share the plans after the wedding even the details if there are bubbles that you would like used for the recessional.

Owners are always onsite if you need them. We were constantly changing the sides due to the wind. When the wind died down we were able to have them up for the rest of the night, and they were always there to help.  Another tip that I had to learn later is they will not eat unless invited. I wish I would have invited them to eat!   They are wonderful people.

Michigan offers so many beautiful venues. I have been to so many over the years.   We have such a beautiful area in all seasons.

Did you hire your flowers or do them yourself? Any tips or websites to share?

1. Hire-we did purchase flowers from a greenhouse to decorate the outdoor ceremony. This was great because then the flowers were used all summer long.
2. I bought bouquets for my flower girls and I, the boy’s boutonniere, center vases with wildflowers, and some strands of eucalyptus for the head table from a florist. I picked a venue that I loved as is and didn’t spend any extra money on flowers! I also did all wildflowers/natural so it was a little less expensive and matched the venue. Having the florist bring it was also amazing, they set it up and left and I didn’t have to worry about doing anything. I really don’t think I would have saved much doing it myself when adding in time/stress/money to buy all the flowers.
3. I did them myself. I wung (winged) it after watching some overly complicated videos on Facebook.

5. Hired – be sure to meet with multiple florists and go with your gut based on how the meeting went.
6. We hired. We got them from Chalet.
7. Wassermans -skeeter! Send Pinterest images so that know exactly what your wanting! Ask them what could be cut to make it cheaper.

2. I wouldn’t do favors – no one took them. Luckily it was just plant seeds, but unnecessary. Otherwise was the best day of my life and I wouldn’t change a thing.

4. Buy the pictures right away…or at least make a book!

6. I think I would have liked it to be darker when people were dancing. It was a little too bright and a lot of people didn’t want to get out there.

Best advice?

2. Relax! Everything will happen the way it’s supposed to happen. Also – always remember what the day is about, you and your partner getting married. Nothing else matters, so don’t let anyone let you think otherwise (including family!) it is your day so do what you want! Lastly – don’t feel like you have to plan your day to be just like everyone else’s, make it feel like you!

4.  Make sure you have a specific time set to bring out the cake. It hardly got served at our wedding even though we cut it before dinner. And although cheesy, think about getting thank you notes with a generic thank you message printed on them and written by you. Know yourself and if you’re bad at that sort of thing, don’t think it’ll get easier when you’re sending out 200 of them. I still have half of mine on the shelf…

5. Have fun and remember to savor every moment

6. Assume that you’ll get off schedule a bit. Assume some things will go wrong. Focus on the fact that you’re getting married and just enjoy everything else.

7. No matter what happens on the day, looking back everything will be perfect and such a wonderful day full of memories! We had a ice cream cart which wasn’t too expensive, was a hit with the guests and we got a lot of left over ice cream!

8. Have fun! I just wanted to enjoy my day and I did.
