Bridal Party Size | How Many People in the Wedding Party?

By Jamie May Photography:

Bridal Party Size.  How many people do you have in your wedding party?

This is a hard question for me to answer.    I photograph a lot of weddings.  The average amount of bridesmaids and groomsman is typically five on each side.   Cassidy and Joel had less than that to accommodate their smaller wedding.

Smaller Wedding Parties

I do appreciated the smaller bridal parties 3-4 is so nice.  As a photographer, it is easier to manage.  I can see everyone very clearly in the picture, etc….  If you get much smaller than that, it can be challenging to come up with a variety of poses, but usually people that chose smaller wedding parties are ok with that.

Large Wedding Parties

I photograph large wedding parties and small. I think we have had up to 10 or 11 on EACH SIDE!   This is fun and a portable party every where you go, but pictures can get a bit tricky. I find that if trying to fit everyone in the frame, full body, you can barely see everyone without a magnifying glass.  However, we can get a lot of different poses, and we do have fun with it and make the most of the large group situation.  The more people, the harder to control the group.  One person will have not put their beverage down, or another is looking away.  I have my strategies, but hire a professional photographer that can manage people because groomsmen get a little crazy when there are many other groomsmen around.

My Vote:

Bridal Party Size.  How many people do you have in your wedding party?    If you are unsure how many people to have in your wedding party, my advise or vote is to keep it to 3-6 people with the best/average number being 5.   Maybe cost isn’t a factor, but if it is, that is another benefit to keeping it small.

Now, the lovely couple below!  Cassidy and Joel held their ceremony and reception in Kalamazoo at the Wine Loft. (Check out my blog post about having your event at one location) It was the first time I have been in Kalamazoo for a wedding.  The downtown had some darling spots to photograph.   I love seeing new areas and having new inspiration! Cassidy and Joel were such a pleasure to work with.  I was a little worried about her tight timeline and she assured me it would be ok and she was right. Sometimes brides you have to trust your gut!

Best Wishes to you both!
